The damaru (ritual drum) is an essential implement of Vajrayana sādhanā practice. The shape and make of this particular damaru is suited for the Inner Tantras. Through the consecration of samadhi, mantra, and blessed substance, the damaru becomes an instrument capable of beseeching the minds and hearts of the dakas and dakinis, thereby enhancing the altruistic power of the practitioner. Therefore, it is important that we view this sacred instrument not merely as a drum, but the embodiment of insight and compassion.
The sound of the damaru is resounding emptiness and the union of the two sides of the drum represents relative and ultimate bodhicitta.
