These rare phurbas are made with mixture of normal iron and iron wrought by Thangtong Gyalpo, the famed "King of the Empty Plain," a 14th century Buddhist adept. The iron used to make this phurba comes from the link of a chain used in the construction of a 700-year-old bridge that was recently salvaged in Bhutan. It is believed that carrying iron produced by Thangtong Gyalpo carries a special blessing, due to forming an interdependent connection with the sacred master.
